Letting All Fathers and Father Figures Know that They Matter

My mother has told me numerous times throughout my upbringing that special observances such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are worthy of celebration. However, she highlighted the importance of not relying on one particular day of the year to show appreciation for that exceptional parent or parent figure in our lives. She underscored that every day is worthy of noting the importance of such individuals in our day-to-day existence. She made sure my brothers and I never neglected to tell our father in one form or another that he matters and that we’re thankful to have him in our lives no matter the day of the year.

That said, there is an excitement that comes from shopping for a card, wrapping a gift as a token of our appreciation, or preparing that meal fondly savored by the person we call dad, da, pops, papa, papi, or any of the other fatherly terms of endearment. Indeed, for most who hold a special place in their hearts for their father, we can’t escape the fact that Father’s Day is a celebratory time of year. And while no one needs to remind me of this, it doesn’t stop my mother from reminding me to call my dad after she lovingly wishes me Happy Father’s Day.

As a father of three, I’ve learned much about this role; it’s a joy, a challenge, an immense responsibility, and a blessing. I wouldn’t ask for anything different. And I’m thankful to those who have served as caring and supportive role models.

Well Wishes to All Fathers

To my dad, dad-in-law, all family members and friends who are dads, and all other fathers and father figures in the world, I wish you a day filled with love, joy, remembrance, and gratitude. Happy Father’s Day!
