Do you start off your morning by telling yourself that your day will go well or not go well? Do you tell yourself that faith will determine the direction of each waking hour? Or, do you simply say, “Meh!”, and pay no mind at all to how the day will unfold? According to psychologist, Clifford N. Lazarus, Ph.D., “our inner statements can affect us dramatically.”
In his article, What to Say When You Talk to Yourself: How to Feel Better by Thinking Better (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/think-well/201007/what-say-when-you-talk-yourself), Dr. Lazarus elaborates on how self-talk, which isn’t always apparent, impacts mood and attitude. While there are predictable and unpredictable events that could inevitably result in an outcome opposite to what we tell ourselves, his point is to not underestimate the power of this inner dialogue.
The takeaway? Using positive self-talk (as opposed to negative self-talk), from the moment we wake up, could significantly influence how we end up experiencing everything we do until the day comes to a close.
