This week, I learned that one of my favorite guitarists, Al Di Meola, suffered a heart attack during an on-stage performance in Romania. Then, to my surprise, Al took to his Facebook page this afternoon, from his hospital bed no less, to call attention that today (September 29th) is World Heart Day.
His wife, Stephanie, informed his fans on his Facebook page today that he’s recovering in a hospital and notes that he’s “doing so much better.” Hopefully, Al will fully recover and resume activities that provide him meaning and purpose. And anyone who knows about Al Di Meola knows that playing the guitar is something he holds dear to his heart (no pun intended).
A Condition That Still Claims Lives
Unfortunately, not everyone who suffers a heart attack lives to tell the story of their unexpected, harrowing experience. Among those experiencing a myocardial infarction (the medical term for a heart attack), 12% will succumb to this life-threatening emergency, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And the Clevland Clinic notes that 50% of deaths will occur only a few hours after the onset of symptoms.
Promoting Good Heart Health
If you have a family history of heart disease, engage in activities that promote good heart health. Activities that minimize the risk of suffering from a heart condition include eating healthy meals, engaging in exercises that strengthen your heart, and finding leisure activities that decrease stress. Of course, following up regularly with your healthcare provider is an equally important commitment to help ensure good heart health.
Get Involved in World Heart Day!

Inspired by Mr. Di Meola’s enthusiasm to bring awareness to heart conditions that claim the lives of many, I invite you to join in this global event to raise awareness and help save lives. For ideas on how to help make a difference, please visit the World Heart Federation or the American Heart Association for more information.
Here’s to good heart health.
